  8.              AST PREMIUM EXEC AND THE WESTERN DIGITAL 60MB DRIVE
  9.

  11. PROBLEM:       The following symptoms occur in Premium Exec systems which
  12.                have a Western Digital WDAH-260-00 model drive installed:
  13.  
  14.                - An "ERROR INITIALIZING HARD DRIVE" occurs upon booting the
  15.                  system.
  16.  
  17.                - The hard drive will spin down on its own.
  18.  
  19.                - The drive cannot be accessed for 25-30 seconds after
  20.                  returning from SUSPEND operation.
  21.  
  22. AFFECTED
  23. SYSTEMS:       All Premium Exec systems.
  24.  
  25. CAUSE:         This is a firmware problem with the Western Digital drives.
  26.                The version of the firmware can be identified by the "CCC"
  27.                (Customer Configuration Code) which is part of the
  28.                manufacturer's configuration information displayed on the
  29.                label.  Drives with a CCC of "D6" will exhibit the above
  30.                symptoms.  To view the label, the keyboard must be removed.

  32.                                   CAUTION:
  33.  
  34.                This operation should be performed by a qualified service
  35.                technician.  It is strongly recommended that it be completed
  36.                by an AST Authorized Service Center.  In no case will AST
  37.                Research, Inc. be liable for damage to the system and its
  38.                components or loss of data caused by improper modification.
  39.  
  40. SOLUTION:      The hard drive should be replaced with a drive having a CCC
  41.                code designated "B2".  The model number for this drive is
  42.                WDAH260-02.
